No. 297: Bubble Tea
I know bubble tea was invented in Taiwan 30 years ago, but I never tasted it until I moved to Paris. It is a rare treat for me, and deadly calorific, but it is a favorite of Button’s, and we were out-and-about at the Centre Pompidou yesterday, so stopped in for a cuppa.
It is the “bobas” or the small tapioca pearls that she loves and that give the tea its name.
The Chinese prefer the bubble black tea, but I prefer the light almond-milk tea or the mango bubbles. What do you prefer?

Oh so sad – just when we were getting along so well … I absolutely can’t STAND bubble tea … its a school thing – we had to eat Tapioca Pudding and the association is there and I’m too weak to get over it. Enjoy it if you will – I won’t be asking for a sip 🙂
Well, I rarely have it. It just gives my daughter so much joy…and with teenagers, you take all the joy you can get when you can get it. 🙂
I can’t argue with that …. I have 4 girls now mostly through Teens (the baby is 19) and those years were hard …. Take all the joy you can …. Even if it is tapioca tea! And of course I really should shut up because I actually don’t drink it!
never heard of bubble tea before, I don’t associate Paris with tea….but this sounds interesting, I’ll have to look out for it…
It’s completely Taiwanese…but just something ma fille discovered and likes a lot. I’m not addicted or anything, but it’s a fun sort of cheesy treat, in a land of highbrow, beautiful treats. It’s worth a try. 🙂
I’m Taiwanese and I grew up drinking boba/bubble tea. My favorite? Matcha green milk tea!
Hmmm. What does matcha mean? Is it fruity?
No, it’s a particular type of green tea. It’s Japanese and has this deep, earthy flavor which I love.
Thanks. I’ll have to look out for that one, although I have to say there are so many fabulous treats to eat in France, I have to choose my calories wisely. But if you say it’s good, I’ll give it a go. 🙂
